Laboratory Methods in Paleontology
(a course in DMNS Paleontology Certification Program)
This course is for the lab specialization certificate.  You will learn and practice the techniques of fossil preparation, preservation and conservation in this hands-on course.  Virginia Tidwell, assistant preparator, teaches this 8 week course where students work in the Schlessman Family Laboratory of Earth Sciences.  She is assisted by Sue Meyer.  In this course, you will learn all the tricks of preparing fossils, including:

Use of glues, vinac, acetone, accelerator, etc.
Use of tools from dental picks to air scribes.
Removing field jackets from specimens.
Acid washing.
Proper recording and tracking of specimens in the lab.
