Geology of Colorado (Boulder Valley) - Field Trip #1, Stop #2: Pre-Cambrian Granites

Stop #2 (10:30 a.m.):  Sitting at the base of the Fountain formation in boulders from the Fountain.  Across the road behind Emmett is 1.6-1.7 billion year old Pre-Cambrian granite.  The granite uplifted and weathered, then the sands of the Fountain formation were deposited on top of this.

White pigmatites in hillside are caused by high amounts of silica and water being injected into the rock.  The white is areas are quartz coves in the middle of the pigmatities.
